CKEditor 5 release

Hello, when is the CKEditor 5 going to be released?

CKEditor 5 is currently a beta feature and initial versio has been released (LPD-11235). I am interested in the following information:

  1. Will all ckeditor4 instances be replaced with CKEditor 5? This includes Web Content editors, Object “Rich Editor” fragment, “Translate pages” view editors, Knowledge Base Article editor.
  2. Will the editor be released at the same time for Liferay DXP (current version: 2025.Q3) and Liferay Portal (current version: GA132 19.02.2025)?
  3. Will CKEditor 5 be available as a beta feature for Liferay Portal before release?

Thank you for your time

You are right regarding point 1 @ecg , thanks for answering.

For questions 2 and 3:

The next Portal version will be out at the same time as the next DXP Long Time Support release in 2026.Q1.

At that point Portal will get the same state as DXP is getting for that release regarding the editor, so CK Editor 5 will be available under Beta or Release Feature Flag bor both distributions.

Hello @Virneessa,

Looking at LPD-36623, which serves as the parent ticket to the one you shared, we can at least start to answer some of your questions:

  1. Will all ckeditor4 instances be replaced with CKEditor 5? This includes Web Content editors, Object “Rich Editor” fragment, “Translate pages” view editors, Knowledge Base Article editor.

The LPD outlines the goal is a full migration from CK Editor 4 to CK Editor 5 across all relevant Liferay DXP components, as well as removing the reliance on multiple editors and standardize the editing experience across Liferay DXP.

Regarding questions 2 & 3, I will defer to someone with more insight into the roadmap. However, considering Liferay CE is moving to an annual release, the implementation will likely depend on the timing of when CKEditor 5 becomes the default feature.

At the moment, the known release information is that it will become the default text editor in a future release in 2026, as outlined in the Upgrading to CKEditor 5 documentation.
