What happened to Liferay CE releases ? Is there a new release planned in the near future?

Hello guys,

Does anyone know why the new CE versions are not being released ? I’ve read they’ve switched to annual releases and while it’s not sufficient in my opinion (because of security issues) it is still better than nothing but the last version 7.4.3.132-ga132 is from February, 19th 2025 and today is April 2029 and still no new release.

Can we expect the new release or they’ve completely abandoned CE versions ? The last version was released 14 months ago.

Are the ToS basically the same for Free tier license as it was with Liferay CE ? I mean can we just use it in a same way how we did with Liferay CE ?

Yes, you can. All you need is a Liferay account and generate the free license key (renewable) and in future, if you want to fully utilize the DXP features, just need to install the new license and will unlock the DXP features.

Also, good news is you will keep get access to more stable updates even on free tier.

Yes I know I would need to generate an free license key but at the same time you need to agree to terms of condition and if I understand it correctly these have changed from LGPL (Liferay CE) to EULA (Liferay DXP + Free Tier). So the question is specific to a use case that when I’ve hosted Liferay powered portal for a customer for an example can I still migrate to Liferay DXP Free Tier license and use the portal as it was with Liferay CE?

Yes, you can use Liferay DXP Free Tier license as it was with Liferay CE. In future, you want to get Liferay DXP features and Liferay support, all you need to do is deploy the new license key which will enable those DXP specific features instead of upgrading CE bundle and modules.
