Hi everyone, just in case you haven’t seen my Blog post on liferay.dev we have made a couple of tweaks to the Free Tier to reduce friction and improve reliability.
Specifically:
As of 2026.q1.2 all Databases that are included in the Compatibility Matrix for Liferay DXP can be used with the Free Tier. So, that includes Oracle, SQL Server, etc.
Each Quarter, instead of limiting the free tier to the .0 release, we are going to be more pragmatic and ensure that you are given access to a robust, stable version. As of today, for the Q1 release, that will be the 2026.q1.2 release.
If you’ve already got an Activation Key for 2026.q1.0, the good news is that it will continue to work with 2026.q1.2. All you’ll need to do is download the latest bundle, or pull the latest docker image. Details for both are available at:
And an update (to the update), Liferay DXP 2026.q1.3-lts was released at the weekend, and this is compatible with the Free Tier. If you’re using .2 (or earlier) feel free to upgrade. You can download from here.
So, I’ll try and keep updating here - but you can also always check Download Liferay DXP Free Tier - Liferay DXP as we will always update that page with the latest dot release which is compatible.
What we will also do, each Quarter, is add the new quarterly release to the list - so you’ll be able to get the stable version of each Quarterly release for the year we are currently in. (I really hope that makes sense!)
And, to explicitly answer your question, 2026.q1.4-lts is compatible with the Free Tier!
Liferay used to post on blogs when there was a new release for CE. Is the version compare tool available for Free Tier users, where we can see what has been changed?
OK, so, a few questions here @arun - I’ll do my best to answer!
I’ll do a new blog with each Quarterly Release, or actually two: One to announce the Release Webinar, which everyone is welcome to join, where we outline the new features, and one to let everyone know where to find the recording if you missed it or want to rewatch.
There are also release notes for each quarterly release on support.liferay.com (e.g. here for Q1) which give you highlights, all features, plus breaking changes etc.
What we’re doing at the moment, and the change that we started this topic with, is doing more than we originally planned (which was just to give the .0 release to the Free Tier) - and so we’ve had a few more releases than expected. These are patch releases, so are about improving stability. I hadn’t planned on blogging about these, preferring to announce here, and updating the Downloads page - but if it’s of value, I can also do a mini blog post - let me know!
But, you actually raise a good point. The version comparison (e.g. here for Q1.0 → Q1.4) is, I’m fairly sure, only accessible to Subscribers. This made sense when we were just releasing .0 for the free tier, but is worth reconsidering. Thanks for bringing it up!
